I really enjoyed my recent 2 night stay at The Great Northern Hotel. Very clean, modern and spectacular views. The breakfast was also really tasty. Would definitely visit again.

Stayed for 2 nights, everything about the hotel from the rooms to the food, drink and service provided by the staff was top class especially in the current environment.

Ciara scored 4 / 5 on 03/07/2020

My husband and I went for a break for our wedding anniversary. The staff were so polite and professional from we walked in the door until we left. I was actually dreading the changes and restrictions with COVID but the staff are so careful and hygienic with everything we were comfortable and almost forgot all about it. We will definitely be back soon

Sorry this break did not do it for us.Basic things not right....Poor TV reception, poor and in some cases no heating in rooms, slow trickling toilet cistern in bathroom and a a consensus that a good returbishment would be needed to bring the hotel into into the standard that the short break traveller demands . A falling star....Action before a busy holiday season kick in. Good food and majestic location however.

A nice location with friendly reception staff. Room is very spacious and ideal for 2 adults and 2 children. Hotel itself is quite old and in need of refurbishment. Dinner staff could improve on their hygiene. Also when I asked for the bill for my dinner - the waiter produced an incorrect bill which was far too low. I tried to explain to him but his English was not the best. When I approached the register to pay - I was rudely confronted by the manager with my hotel reservation stating that I only paid for Bed&Breakfast and I have to pay for dinner. I told him that the waiter brought me the incorrect bill and I was trying to explain that to him and I wanted to pay the correct price. I felt I was accused of trying to cheat the hotel out of money and the entire situation ruined my impressions of the hotel at that point. A shame really as I was enjoying the stay

Very disappointing - Myself and four friends stayed in the hotel - This was meant to be a nice relaxing break but it was anything but relaxing. There were a few more joining us and I called the hotel to see if they would offer a reduced rate or accommodate an extra bed in the rooms -they would not negotiate a reduced rate fro those joining . As a result the other 6 stayed elsewhere. View from room was dreadful - we were looking out at a fire exit and under it was filthy/tap in room was broken which meant we had a tap dripping all night. Pool and jacuzzi was cold. All 10 of us ate in the hotel - restaurant staff were lovely but the food was just ok. We went to bed around 12.30 but the noise between 2 and 4 was horrendous so we got very little sleep. Such a shame as the location was fabulous even with bad weather.

One of the worse hotels I've spent the night. Room very dull, bathroom something from early1980's. Broken shower an hot tap. Broken fitting on walls from old handrails. Evening meal was not included in my booking deal. We book dinner costing €30 per person for 3course very very basic meal with little favour. It classed as four star hotel but I've stayed in better 2star hotel. Yes it has great golf course but a stand alone hotel it really bad. Sorry but true.

Really enjoyed our stay here staff were very friendly. The hotel is in a unique location overlooking Bundoran and with beautiful walkways. Highly recommend this hotel for a relaxing break

Frances scored 2 / 5 on 19/03/2015

The lobby and bar are very nice but the room was very disappointing. The room was very dark and dreary and in bad need of redecorating. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was good but overall I don't think I would stay here again because of the room.

the hotel staff were very good the rooms are dated but spotless great location and were cleaned during our stay breakfast was a bit of a let down food wise overall very nice stay and i would book again

We were there at the end of the season, which meant things looked like they were in the process of shutting down for the winter. it wasn't particularly warm in the rooms, there was no hot water coming out of the shower or sink, the staff had multiple jobs each, so the waiter serving dinner had to run back and forth between the kitchen, the bar, tables, a function room where he had to sort technical difficulties some group had, etc. etc. That meant quite a lot of waiting time between getting a chance to order the meal, the meal being served, waiting to get a chance to order a drink, getting a chance to pay. etc. But the staff was absolutely fantastic! I was quite ill with migraines, etc. during my stay which meant I missed breakfast. Since I had to check out of the room, a lovely girl let me sit in the closed bar, where it was dark and quiet, which was great for my headache. She also went into the kitchen and got me tea and toast and even came back a few times to check on me. You can forgive a lack of hot water when you see that there is staff who is ready to go the extra mile! I was very, very impressed with the staff!!!

Ac scored 1 / 5 on 22/09/2014

Wouldn't call it a 4 star hotel. Rooms not sound proof at all. Room very small. Had to search for a cleaner to receive ONE towel for 2 people, towels not available until 4pm?? (shouldn't be the case) bug in bath on arrival. Lamps above bed too close so kept hitting off them. Pillows very flat. Half of the channels didn't work on the TV. No wifi in the room. Wouldn't stay there again

Veronica scored 2 / 5 on 29/06/2014

The entire hotel is faded and dated. I would not stay again . The room was clean and it had the basics. The bed clothes were average, I was very surprised to find we got blankets. The breakfast was disappointing but fine if you liked fried food. Poor fruit choices poor bread and cereal choices no cheeses just the old staples tinned grapefruit and tired fruit salad. I met an unfriendly receptionist who treated my request with indifference I can't think of a single positive not even the price of the room

Marian scored 4 / 5 on 23/04/2014

We were booked in for one night and found our stay very enjoyable and relaxing. The staff were very good and the food was excellent. Will definitely be returnig for a longer stay next time

Susan scored 1 / 5 on 20/02/2014

Hotel was very disappointing not up to standard and certainly not four star, in bad need of a re-vamp. Bedroom was not up to standard and extremley disappointing, bed clothes were certainly not up to standard and insufficient. The only thing that did not ruin the whole weekend was the food was alright. But on our second day there we had taken our young children up the town and decided to have our food back in hotel and we walked back only to be told there was no bar food that day!!! Only soup and sandwiches. The Restaurant would not have been open for another two hours. So we had to leave the hotel to get some food a disgrace!!! for a Hotel. It was our first time in Donegal, but we wont be back. They need to get the Brennan brothers in badly to do a revamp its far from four Star. Some of the staff were friendly but they need to upskill mainly their older staff on good customer service practice and that it doesnt hurt to smile!!!! They need to keep their Chef as that is the only thing that I would commend them for and some of their staff!!!

My husband and I thought our Lild break was very good value. The hotel was warm and comfortable and we enjoyed the fact that the breakfast was served to our table, instead of the usual buffet that's in most hotels nowadays The dining room was beautiful; it reminded me of the grand dining room on a cruise ship.Dinner the previous evening was tasty enough although the menu lacked imagination. The bedrooms could do with updating but they had everything we needed and were spotlessly clean. The hotel itself is full of character. The only downside for me was the leisure centre; the pool area and changing rooms needed a good clean and the showers were cold. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay and would definitely go on another Lidl break.

Paula scored 1 / 5 on 21/05/2013

We would never stay here again The food was crap, hospitality crap, facilities dreadful, beds very uncomfortable, hotel very noisy. We would NOT recommend this hotel.

Myself and my husband and our four year old son stayed in the Great Northern Hotel during the bank holiday weekend. It is the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in and over many years i have visited many hotels both here and abroad. From the moment we stepped inside the door we could feel the warmth of the hotel as it was chilly out and every radiator was piping hot from downstairs to the rooms upstairs.the warmth also radiated from the reception desk with the smiling faces of the girls who greeted us. the entire hotel is child friendly especially the stairs as they are wide and safe. It is like a huge big house and eeryone is treated as part of their family. The decor is old world and so tasteful and the diningroom is breathtaking. We loved the antique style paintings around every corner and the big cosy couches. The food was so delicious especially the duck, my husband is still raving about it.I especially want to commend the young girls and the red haired boy in the diningroom. They were so attentive to our needs especially with a young child.Thank you all so so much.we will be returning again and again please god.

Yes we had a lovely relaxing week end in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran. There was a great buzz around the place. The temperatures outside were very cold but the hotel was very warm and cosy. The dining room service and food were excellent. We would definately go back again. Perhaps next time we would look for a longer bed as I felt the bed was short!!!!

Ciara scored 3 / 5 on 20/05/2011

The hotel is in a great location, decor is extremely dated, the meal was ok the restaurant staff were unfriendly and unprofessional and were more interested in clearing tables than they were serving customers. However reception staff were extremely friendly and willing to help. Rooms were a good size and had good facilities. Breakfast was good. Its definately value for money however it did not fufil the standards of a four star hotel and I would not stay again.

Teresa scored 4 / 5 on 12/04/2011

The Hotel is situated in a great location with excellent views and within easy access of the town, food excellent and overall feel of the hotel is relaxing. Overall package was great value for money and definitely worth a visit. Restaurant staff could be a little bit more professional Teresa

The hotel's 'four star' rating is wildly exaggerrated. Staff were friendly but let down by the dated decor and questionable kitchen. The package was value for money, in that breakfast was included both days and we made good use of the leisure centre (which was nice if not very small). We chose not to eat in the hotel the second night. The cooked breakfast was substantial value for money but really on the salty/reheated side of things and was accompanied by mouldy bread on one of the mornings. The hotel itself would benefit greatly from a fresh lick of paint and a general update in terms of entertainment .The average age of the guests staying here was quite elderly also so wouldn't recommend the area or the hotel to younger couples or families.

Tony scored 4 / 5 on 30/06/2010

The Great Northern Hotel Bundoran is on one of the most spectacular locations in Ireland. We had a room on the second floor with fantastic views over Donegal Bay. The room and service were excellent and the golf course is challenging and enjoyable. A cliff walk from the hotel to Tullan strand (a mecca for surfers) is something to be experienced. Breakfeast each morning was excellent and service left nothing to be desired. Dinner while maybe not gourmet standard was very edible and well presented. The athmosphere was added to by a few visits from Mr McEniff to enquire into how we were enjoying our stay and encourage us to return. The weather for our stay was superb which is reallya bonus. All in all I would recommend this hotel and hope to return Tony
